Servos can be used without gearboxes; however, some applications can benefit from the high torque output by utilizing a gearbox. The output torque is increased by direct proportion to the gear ratio. Inertia balancing is another key reason for using a gearbox. Some applications may have size restraints where a 90-degree gearbox will solve a mounting space issue.
